Keynote Social: Light in the Public Realm
Presentation Overview
How can design reveal unique characteristics of a place and offer the individual a deeper collective experience of their environment?
At the intersection of art, engineering, and architecture, “Light in the Public Realm” will explore James Carpenter’s focus upon the phenomenological qualities of light as a central organizing principle of the public realm.
Using his studio’s infrastructural, cultural, and civic projects, James Carpenter will outline innovative strategies that merge program, performance, structure, and light.
Keynote Speaker: James Carpenter
James Carpenter’s distinctive vision is conceptually founded upon revealing the presence of light, it’s varied optical manifestations and properties, as carried by responsive materials within the urban environment. Originally studying architecture before concentrating on the fine arts, Carpenter has exhibited in North America and Europe through the 1970s, creating immersive film installations. Carpenter established his New York studio in 1979 which has applied these aesthetic principles to transforming the public realm.
Carpenter has been recognized with numerous national and international awards, including the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship and the Smithsonian National Environment Design Award. He holds a degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, was a Loeb Fellow of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and is Hon. RIBA and RDI.
